How to keep Nevada motorcyclists safe on the road

If you ride a motorcycle, you no doubt have heard the horror stories about motorcycle accidents. Surely your family told you how dangerous they are. However, motorcyclists have as much right to be on the road as anyone else. Their safety is a hot topic and should be taken into consideration by both motorcycle and automobile drivers.

The Center for Disease Control has done significant research on the issue. Besides the statistics about motorcyclist's injuries, they have tips on how motorcyclists can help keep themselves safe:

  • Always wear a helmet that is approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • Never ride your motorcycle after drinking alcohol.
  • Wear protective clothing that provides some level of injury protection.
  • Avoid tailgating.
  • Maintain a safe speed and exercise caution when traveling over slippery surfaces or gravel.

A motorcyclist's upper body clothing should also include bright colors or reflective materials, so that other motorists can more easily see you. A DOT-approved helmet is one that meets certain government safety specifications. The helmets are constructed in a way that is proven to decrease the possibility for head injury. This is an especially important safety measure because head injuries are one of the leading causes of motorcycle fatalities and catastrophic injuries according to the CDC.

Automobile driver inattention or negligence is also a huge factor in motorcycle accidents. If you or a loved one has been the victim of a motorcycle accident, consider that another party may be at fault. The injuries one can suffer in such an accident can affect the rest of their life. However, victims and their families should not have to suffer the financial consequences of an accident caused by someone else's negligence.
