Winter driving tips for holiday travel

The holiday season is a wonderful time of year. However, the holiday season also coincides with the coldest weeks of the year for much of the country. Although winter weather can create beautiful and breathtaking landscapes across the state of Nevada, it can also cause big problems on busy roadways. Here are a few tips to help drivers who encounter snow and ice-covered roads as they travel during the upcoming holiday season.

One of the most important things a driver can do when traveling on snowy and slick roadways is to slow down. In winter conditions, simply reducing speed will greatly reduce the likelihood of a crash by allowing a driver to stay in control of his or her vehicle. It is also crucially important to increase following distance. This will allow a driver more time to recover and prevent an accident should he or she lose control of the vehicle.

Drivers should also be aware of what to do if the vehicle starts to skid. If the vehicle begins to slide, do not panic. Steer in the direction of the skid and never steer in the opposite direction. Look for an escape route and steer toward it.

Proper vehicle maintenance cannot be overlooked during the winter months, especially for those who are planning on traveling longer distances. Winter conditions will put a strain on any vehicle, causing tires to deflate, batteries to weaken and other issues. Before traveling, always inspect the vehicle. Make sure batteries have an adequate charge and tires are properly inflated.

Although the holiday season is undoubtedly a beautiful time in Nevada, it is also one of the most dangerous seasons in which to drive. Crashes will always increase when road conditions deteriorate. If negligence in car accidents result in injury or loss, victims and families have the right to consult a legal representative. A successfully litigated lawsuit could result in compensation to help with any financial losses that may have occurred due to an unfortunate accident.
